Eliza Southwood's Cycling Screen Prints are among her most popular works. Screen printing is a technique that is made by creating a stencil (made of paper or a lacquer) onto a stretched mesh screen. Ink is then pulled over the stencil by a squeegee. Any area of stencil blocks colour transfer, while exposed areas of screen allow the ink to go through onto the paper. Each colour is applied as a separate layer, with a different stencil. Southwood's works are limited editions - each is hand numbered and signed.
Eliza Southwood's architectural training fostered a technical eye for detail and colour which is apparent in her artwork. After practicing as an architect for ten years, she decided to take up a career as a full time artist and illustrator in 2011. She has been shortlisted for the AOI Prize for Illustration twice. Her recent clients include Rapha, Magma, Bloomsbury, Laurence King Publishing, Sustrans and the V&A Museum. Southwood regularly exhibits at the Affordable Art Fair with East London Printmakers and currently has prints on display at the Old Cafe, Foyles and the Rapha CC Gallery in Manchester. From the age of ten she spent her childhood in a remote part of Spain, where she grew up drawing and painting scenes of local life in the mountains. Her specialty is silk screen printing, but she also works in mixed media, watercolour and acrylic. One of her favourite subjects is cycling, and over the years she has a produced a wide range of cycling themed prints, many of which are inspired by bike races.
