‘There are no wasted days’ (2023)
In this series Hoogeweegen depicts nature and our engagement with it.
The endangered environment is the inescapable subject of our imminent future. Even as the works blur into abstraction, these depictions of landscapes and nature evoke particular emotions. Hoogeweegen captures the powerful particularities of places on the cusp of change, that will no longer be the same. In these works she witnesses the ephemeral nature of flowers, a sunset dip in a lake and snow melting in a forest; these images reflect our visceral and emotional engagement with the phenomenon of nature.

'Face 27' (2012)
A work on self representation, Hoogeweegen examines the multiple ways people chose to present themselves to the world through social media, specifically Facebook. The variety of images reflects the numerous masks of identity available to us.
‘Incandescent’
In this series, Hoogeweegen works from found photographs of women. She aims to impact the viewer with visceral emotion and the incandescence emanating from the female psyche. The work also celebrates strength, beauty and diversity.
Below we learn more Barbara Hoogeweegen's medium, influences and artistic inspirations.
Medium:
In all three series, Hoogeweegen works in oil paint on smooth hard surfaces; aluminium for the ‘Face’ series, wood box panel for the ‘There are no wasted days‘ series and polyester canvas for the ‘Incandescent’ series.
The surfaces enable Hoogeweegen’s fast smooth mark making which create a fresh immediacy; this communicates an exaggerated energy and intensity that impacts the viewer with a visceral emotional punch.

Influences:
"Here are some artists that come to mind; they have very different practices, but each has offered me a different influence in either technique or philosophy.
Paula Rego, Erika Seguin, Anselm Kiefer, Francesca Woodman, Jenna Gribbon, Gregory Crewdson, Eric Fischl, Andrew Cranston, Francisco Goya, Marlene Dumas, Howard Hodgkin."
Inspiration:
“ Where to begin; inspiration comes in a thousand different ways, a story read, a conversation had, an unusual technique spotted by another artist in a gallery, a glimpse of a sunset, a childhood memory; the list is endless. My mind is also constantly churning through a library of thousands of art images I have looked at in over 30 years. Creativity is like fishing, it is often when I least expect it that the hook catches an idea”
